Where to Stay in Hanoi: 6 Hotels in the Old Quarter That Actually Earn Their Rating

Hanoi has 4,000+ hotels on Booking.com, almost all clustered around Hoan Kiem Lake. We checked live ratings and picked six that actually earn their score — from a $90-a-night boutique to the city’s most famous hotel.

Hanoi has more than 4,000 listings on Booking.com, and almost all of them cluster inside or just outside the same half-square-mile: the Old Quarter around Hoan Kiem Lake. That’s good news for a first-time visitor — it means you can walk to the lake, the night market, and most of the food stalls people fly here for, from almost anywhere you book — and bad news when you’re the one trying to pick between 200 nearly-identical “boutique hotel and spa” listings that all have a rooftop bar and a 9.2 rating.

We pulled the current top-rated, reasonably priced options in and around Hoan Kiem, checked their live scores and review counts on Booking.com, and picked six that cover every budget from a $90-a-night boutique to Hanoi’s most famous hotel in the world. Every link below goes straight to that hotel’s Booking.com page.

Getting in from Noi Bai Airport

Noi Bai International Airport sits about 35 km (45–60 minutes by car, longer in rush hour) north of the Old Quarter — far enough that you don’t want to be figuring out a metered taxi queue after a long-haul flight. All six hotels below can arrange a private transfer for an extra fee, and it’s usually the least stressful way to do the first leg of the trip, especially if you’re arriving after dark.

How we chose

Every hotel on this list is rated 9.0+ on Booking.com (one exception explained below), has at least 700 recent guest reviews, and sits inside or within a short walk of the Old Quarter / Hoan Kiem district — so you’re never more than 10–15 minutes on foot from the lake. We deliberately mixed price tiers: one historic splurge, four strong 9.2–9.6 mid-range boutiques, and one genuine budget pick.

1. Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi — the splurge

If you only stay somewhere “iconic” once on this trip, make it this one. Opened in 1901, the Metropole is Hanoi’s most famous hotel by a wide margin — colonial-era architecture, a bomb shelter you can tour from the Vietnam War era, and a courtyard pool that feels nothing like the rest of the Old Quarter’s dense, motorbike-choked streets. It’s rated 9.4 on Booking.com from 741 reviews, and it sits on Ngô Quyền street, a 5-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake.

It’s also priced like what it is — several times a night more than the boutique hotels below — so this is the one to book for an anniversary or a single splurge night, not the whole trip, unless budget genuinely isn’t a question.

2. The Legend Hanoi Hotel — the all-rounder

Don’t confuse this with the Metropole above — The Legend Hanoi is a separate, unrelated boutique hotel on Phố Yết Kiêu in Hoan Kiem, and it’s currently one of the highest-rated stays in the city: 9.5 from 2,502 reviews, with rooms from around $91/night for two adults. Guests consistently mention the pool (a genuine rarity at this price point in the Old Quarter), free airport pickup on some room categories, and a breakfast spread that punches above a 3-star price tag.

3. Proverb Hotel Hanoi — best pool for the price

Proverb sits squarely in Hoan Kiem and has quietly become one of the best-reviewed hotels in the city — 9.6 from 1,147 reviews, rooms from around $100/night. What sets it apart from the half-dozen similarly-named “Premium” and “Signature” hotels nearby is the rooftop: an actual outdoor pool and bar with lake-district views, plus a sauna, which is unusual at this price tier.

4. Hotel de Lagom — the design pick

Minimalist, Scandinavian-leaning interiors in a city where most “boutique” hotels mean heavy wood and brass — Hotel de Lagom stands out visually in every review photo. It’s a genuine 5-star on Booking.com’s own classification, rated 9.3 from 1,148 reviews, with rooms from roughly $104/night, and it has a rooftop terrace, small pool, and gym that reviewers consistently call out as better-finished than the price suggests.

5. Eliana Premio Hotel Hanoi — best breakfast

Eliana Premio has built its reputation almost entirely on its breakfast spread — reviewers specifically mention it more than almost any other hotel in this list — and it backs that up with a 9.2+ rating from well over 3,000 reviews, which is a huge sample size for a single boutique property. It’s a 2-minute walk from the edge of the Old Quarter’s main food streets, and several room categories include free airport transfer.

6. Hanoi Pearl Hotel — the budget pick

The only hotel on this list under 9.0 — and we’ve kept it anyway, because at 8.9 from 1,093 reviews it’s still “excellent” by Booking.com’s own scale, and it’s the most consistently affordable option in walking distance of the lake. It sits on Bao Khanh lane, a narrow alley literally one block from Hoan Kiem Lake, with free Wi-Fi and an airport transfer service (paid add-on) available directly through the hotel.

When to book

Hanoi’s high season runs October through April, when the weather is driest and coolest — this is also when the hotels above fill up fastest and prices climb. If you’re flexible, May and September sit in a shoulder zone with fewer crowds and noticeably lower rates, though you’ll trade that for a higher chance of rain. Avoid Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, which moves year to year) unless you specifically want to experience it — much of the city, including many restaurants, shuts down for several days.
